Murray Rockowitz is a fine art portrait photographer located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Bay Area Photographer, Murray Rockowitz, well known among collectors of fine art portrait photography for his insightful and beautifully crafted portraits, has served private and commercial clients throughout the world for over 27 years.
In his studio and on location Murray strives in helping people bring forth their true essence. While embracing the medium of digital capture and printing, he maintains his strong commitment to film and silver gelatin printing. ?While I appreciate and use the creative tools of digital photography, the esthetic of traditional B&W photography pleases me like no other. It is still very satisfying exciting to produce individual prints in the darkroom, I love it?, Rockowitz says.
As a photographer, he is not only an artist but also storyteller and a documentarian. Murray shares his passion and knowledge of photography; having taught at Napa Valley College, the Petaluma Arts Center, guest lectures in various institutions, and currently through SSU, workshops in his studio and other venues to inspire, teach and learn with his students.

I came to California from Rochester, NY with a used Kodak Retina llC and a hand held meter my Dad gave me when I was in my 20s in 1975. How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I make insightful, compelling portraits of people like none other around.
For Black & White I STILL USE FILM, and produce beautiful hand made Gelatin Silver Prints in the darkroom (there is nothing like it). For color digital is truly magnificent.

One location.

You have portrayed the essence of who we are in the portraits you made for us. they are beautiful, thank you.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case.
